Methodology

The lesson will begin with a brief lecture on the historical context of Symphony No. 9, including Beethoven's personal life and the political climate of Europe at the time. Students will then listen to a recording of Symphony No. 9 while following along with a provided listening guide. After the listening activity, students will work in small groups to analyze the musical structure and themes of the symphony. Finally, students will have the opportunity to perform a short excerpt from Symphony No. 9 on a chosen instrument.
