Methodology:
This activity will be conducted in a computer lab or with individual devices that have internet access. Students will work individually or in pairs to complete the following tasks:
Resources/Materials:
- Computers or individual devices with internet access
- Online word game platforms (e.g., Vocabulary.com, Quizlet, Wordle)
- Printed vocabulary lists (optional)
Instructions:
1. Introduce the activity by explaining the importance of vocabulary development and its impact on language skills.
2. Provide students with a list of new vocabulary words relevant to the current unit or topic. Alternatively, students can select their own words from a given list or from their readings.
3. Instruct students to access an online word game platform of their choice (e.g., Vocabulary.com, Quizlet, Wordle) or provide them with printed vocabulary lists if online access is not available.
4. Ask students to create an account or log in to the chosen platform.
5. Direct students to explore the available word games on the platform and choose at least three different games to play.
6. Encourage students to actively engage with the games, applying their knowledge of the vocabulary words and challenging themselves to improve their scores or completion times.
7. After completing the games, students should reflect on their experience and write a short paragraph discussing:
- Their favorite game and why they enjoyed it
- The most challenging game and what strategies they used to overcome the challenges
- How playing these word games helped them understand and remember the vocabulary words
8. Optional: As an extension activity, students can create their own word games using the vocabulary words and share them with their classmates.
Assessment:
Assess students' understanding and application of vocabulary words through the following:
- Reviewing their written reflections on the word games, looking for evidence of comprehension and engagement
- Observing students' participation and performance during the word games
- Optional: Evaluating the word games created by students (if extension activity is completed)
